There is a grief with a name, and a grief with no name at all — one for the person we lost, one for the Absolute we’ve been homesick for since before memory. This essay asks whether they are the same grief, wearing two different faces, and whether the loudest pain of a human life might be exactly loud enough to wake what has been sleeping in the cells all along.
